Basic Texas Holdem Advice

While there is no advice that applies to all Texas Holdem games, some advice on poker play is worth remembering. Here are some tips that can be applied to most Texas Holdem games and poker tournaments.

Know Your Position on the Table

Where you are seated in relation to the button greatly matters in terms of the types of hands one should play. If you are in the early position, you have to be very careful about your judgment on whether you are going to make a call, raise, or fold. When acting in early position, there are several players waiting to act behind you. Thus, players from early position should up the standards of the hands they enter the pot with. Players can begin relaxing their standards as they play from the later positions.

Adjust Play Based on Table Conditions

Poker players often have the misconception that they should play poker only a certain way. This is not true. A poker player is most profitable when he acts contrary to the overall composition of the table. If the table is mostly aggressive, a poker player does not need to do much betting. The opposing players will often bet your hand for you. If the table is passive, running the table over by aggressively betting is a great course of action. Players should let the table conditions determine their playing style as opposed to allowing general advice from a book or forum dictate how they should play.

No Shame in Folding

When playing poker, there is no shame in folding. Many players overplay hands such as Ace-King or cannot get away from pocket aces or kings when the board is highly coordinated and they are obviously beat. A poker player will not have a defining moment in his session by overstaying their welcome in a hand. However, a player will be greatly rewarded for dropping a hand when he is beat before it becomes more costly. Doing such things will allow the player to live to fight another day.

Bluff when Appropriate

Poker players should not bluff simply for the sake of running a bluff. A well-timed bluff can take down a nice pot. However, when the bluff is not well thought out, a player can look foolish and lose a fair amount of chips.

Don’t Be afraid to Race

When playing poker tournaments or cash games, racing for chips is appropriate when the situation calls for it. Short stacked players need and want to race, as they are struggling to keep their heads above water. Thus, they do not have the luxury of waiting for a good hand. When playing from the bigger stack, a player should challenge short stacked players to race for their tournament lives.
