Middle Stages Multi Table Tournament Strategy

The middle stage of a poker tournament is very different from the tournament’s early stages. The ambiance is specifically different, and is certainly more competitive as compared to the more carefree playing during the early stages. You cannot expect the same competency or lack of it that you may have enjoyed while playing during the tournament’s opening.

The environment in the middle stages of a tournament becomes more guarded. This is because the more competent players are now the ones that you should be playing against. This calls for a strategy that focuses on defending your position and chips from the other players, as well as attacking the chips of others.
Loosen Up

While the norm has been to play tight and easy during the early stages of a poker tournament, things start to take a 360-degree turn as the tournament progresses. Since you are playing with more competent players, the poker players should loosen up a bit during the middle of the tournament.  However, be careful not to go too far with loosening up your play, as doing so can be quite costly.  Keep in mind, during the middle stages of a poker tournament; bluffing becomes more profitable, as well as more common.  Thus, players will attempt to bluff and players should remain vigilant for hints of a bluff.
Choose Your Targets Wisely

During the middle of the poker tournament, a player should selectively pick and choose their spots.  Players should utilize position and force to attack their opposition.  When in late position, play aggressively and pressure those who are in the blinds, as well as those players who enter early and often.

Do not be afraid to steal blinds.  The blinds will be a lifeline to survival.  Because the blinds increase as the tournament progresses, each passing blind becomes more and more valuable.  Additionally, be ready, willing, and able to defend your own blinds.  Players will look to steal blinds wherever they can.  Thus, you must be prepared to aggressively defending your blinds when the time arises.

As opportunities arise, you should be conscious about those stronger players who are working to drain you of your chips.  Be mindful of players who always bet the river, as well as those who bet every flop in an effort to knock players off their hands.  Challenge these players, refusing to relinquish chips to them.  Additionally, players should find a fold early enough that they will not spew chips needlessly.
